GoldenEye on PC Source v5.0 runs on a converted mod of Half-Life 2. The game has received a significant update since and has been developing since 2009. Here’s how to download and play the popular N64 game.

GoldenEye 007, originally released for the Nintendo 64 in 1997, is a legendary first-person shooter video game developed by Rare and based on the James Bond film of the same name. Its popularity led to a desire among fans for a PC version, resulting in the development of “GoldenEye: Source.” This PC adaptation is a fan-made multiplayer-focused game that seeks to recreate the essence of the original GoldenEye’s multiplayer experience while utilizing modern graphics and gameplay enhancements.

“GoldenEye: Source” brings the classic multiplayer action to the PC platform, offering a range of maps, characters, and weapons reminiscent of the original game. The PC adaptation retains the beloved split-screen multiplayer mode, allowing players to compete against friends or AI opponents in various iconic locations. While the graphics and mechanics have been modernized to provide a more immersive experience, the core gameplay mechanics that made the original GoldenEye a hit are faithfully preserved, paying homage to the game’s legacy.

The ever-popular Nintendo N64 game, GoldenEye 007 game, is playable on PC and looks fantastic. The game does not run on an emulator and is a standalone multiplayer game that you can download and install for free. The game is based on a Half-Life 2 conversion mod, making it one of the best.

One of the greatest and most nostalgia-inducing games has been remade for PC.

The classic Goldeneye for N64 has been wholly remade – with updated graphics and new maps – so people can play it for free on their PC.

The new game uses Valve’s Source engine but adds favorites, including old maps like Dam and Bunker, the old guns, and classic, almost xenophobic Russian enemies.

GoldenEye 007 gets an unofficial multiplayer remake with modern graphics.

GoldenEye 007, the beloved N64 first-person shooter, has been recreated in high-definition glory by a team of dedicated fans over 10 years. The mod, known as GoldenEye: Source, received its first update this week in more than three years. It’s free to download, and it features 25 recreated maps, 10 different multiplayer modes, and redesigned versions of the original game’s 28 weapons. It was created using Valve’s Source engine, the same tools used to create Counter-Strike and Half-Life games. So it’s a massive step up in visuals and performance for one of the more drastically dated gaming masterpieces of the last 20 years.

Unfortunately, there’s no single-player mode included in the mod. Although the trailer appears to show iconic moments from the original — including the fight with Alec Trevelyan in the Cradle mission and the showdown with Jaws at the Aztec level — the developers’ website confirms the current version is multiplayer-only. “No, we have no plans to make single-player as we do not have the resources or a sufficient number of developers to create it,” reads the official FAQ.

‘GOLDENEYE: SOURCE’ DOES NOT INCLUDE A SINGLE-PLAYER MODE WITH THE ORIGINAL’S MISSIONS

Still, the attention to detail and the effort that went into GoldenEye: Source make it one of the most polished HD remakes of an N64 classic. The system requirements aren’t taxing, given the Source engine was initially designed to support Windows XP, but the recommended specs include about 4GB of RAM running on Windows 7/8.1/10/11. Now have a slapping-only deathmatch in the Facility, for old times’ sake.

Update August 12th, 5:01 PM ET: Clarified that GoldenEye: Source has been available throughout its development but this week received its first substantial update in more than three years.

And just like any super agent, Bond is armed to the teeth. Not only does he have the usual assortment of nifty gadgets from Q (pressing Start will pull up Bond’s wristwatch, complete with a subscreen full of exciting items that can be used on the various stages), he can collect from over 15 different weapons including Sniper Rifles, Machine Guns, Throwing Knives, Hand Grenades and more. And since the game works with the Rumble Pak, you’ll feel every shot and explosion in the game as if you were right there in the middle of the action (sorry if that sounds like a press release, but it’s true).

Graphically, GoldenEye looks excellent, with the best use of textures yet on the N64 and a seemingly infinite horizon that you can look into (with hardly any fog, yawl). The music isn’t too shabby either, with various remixes of the traditional Bond theme and music taken straight from the movie.

Also worth mentioning is the fantastic Four-player Mode, which came as a complete surprise-it’s one of the best Four-player Modes, not the best on the N64 yet. For more, check out the Gamer’s Edge sidebar on this page.

GoldenEye 007 is due out in August, and we’ll be back next month with the lowdown when the Review Crew gets their hands on the final version.

How to download GoldenEye on PC: Get Steam and Source SDKbase 2007

As the game is built on valve’s very own Source engine, you’ll need a few components to make the game run the Half-Life 2 mod.

The first is Steam, which is free to download and install. You’ll need to create an account if you haven’t got one already –

Once you’ve installed Steam, hover over Library and click on Tools.

You’ll now see a long list of tools and want to look for Source SDK Base 2007. Once you find it, right-click to bring up a selection of actions and click on Install Game.

You’ll now be prompted to install the tool, which is 3.75GB in size, so make sure you’ve got enough space on your desired hard drive.

Once it downloads and installs, you’ll be set to get the mod from Moddb’s website.

You’ll need to install the two Steam components to play the game. You can now download the .exe installer for your PC.

Head over to Moddb’s website and download the installer. Once the 2.04GB file has been downloaded, you can run the installer.

Note: The screenshot was taken before the game was released. The game is now available.

Once you finish running the installer, run the game, and you’ll be able to play your favorite N64 game all over again!

We found the game to run smoothly, be extremely well-detailed, and have many servers available.

It should be noted that you will not need Half-Life 2 installed to run this. The game also will run on anything that meets Half-Life 2’s PC specifications, which are extremely low. Even a potato can run HL2!

How to play GoldenEye on PC: What’s new in GoldenEye:

The game has been around since 2009, received a significant update in 2013, and now we’ve got another major update.

In the fully multiplayer game, you’ll be able to play on 25 different original maps through various game modes, such as the new ‘A View to a Kill’ and ‘Gun Trade’ modes.

The new version also introduced strafe running, which will make the game a lot more enjoyable to those used to traditional shooters.

Within the game, you’ll be able to choose between different characters, enjoy high-detailed weapons and blast your way through achievements!

We’re super excited about the game; it brings back the nostalgia of playing on our Nintendo N64. Let us know in the comments below if you managed to get the game running and your thoughts after playing it.

Conclusion

Everybody’s favorite secret agent is about to finally make his long-overdue appearance on the Nintendo 64, courtesy of Nintendo and Rare. After almost two years of development, GoldenEye 007 was recently shown to us at the EGM offices in near-complete form.

GoldenEye 007 is a first-person shooting game (similar to Turok or Doom) that follows the movie of the same name’s basic plot and takes place in similar locations worldwide. Each of the game’s 18 stages begins with a detailed mission briefing that includes a list of objectives that must be carried out to complete the stage. The number of objectives per stage will depend on which of the three difficulty levels you choose before play (obviously, the more complex the difficulty, the more objectives). The cool thing about GoldenEye is that even if you choose a more manageable level and only have to do one or two things on a particular stage, you can still complete the other, more challenging tasks if you wish the welcome feature indeed.
