Osirix For PC Windows 7/8.1/10/11 (32-bit or 64-bit) & Mac
Osirix For PC is an image processing application for Mac dedicated to DICOM images (“.dcm”/. “DCM” extension) produced by equipment (MRI, CT, PET, PET-CT, …). OsiriX is complementary to existing viewers, in particular to nuclear medicine viewers. It can read many other file formats: TIFF (8,16, 32 bits), JPEG, PDF, AVI, MPEG, and QuickTime. It complies with the DICOM standard for image communication and file formats. OsiriX can receive images transferred by DICOM communication protocol from any PACS or medical imaging modality (STORE SCP – Service Class Provider, STORE SCU – Service Class User, and Query/Retrieve).
OsiriX is a sophisticated medical imaging software primarily developed for the macOS platform. Widely recognized in the medical community, it serves as a powerful viewer and workstation for various medical imaging modalities, most notably DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) files commonly generated in radiology and other medical imaging practices. OsiriX enables healthcare professionals to visualize, analyze, and interpret these images, aiding in diagnostics, treatment planning, and research endeavors.
One of OsiriX’s standout features is its robust 3D rendering capabilities. It can reconstruct images in three dimensions, offering healthcare practitioners valuable insights into anatomical structures and pathological conditions. Furthermore, OsiriX boasts comprehensive tools for image manipulation, annotations, measurements, and advanced post-processing techniques. Its user-friendly interface and customizable layouts enhance efficiency in image review and analysis workflows.
The software’s wide-ranging applicability, from general radiology to specialized medical disciplines, has contributed to its popularity. However, it’s important to note that while OsiriX was primarily developed for macOS, there have been some efforts to create versions for other platforms, including Windows, although their features and capabilities might vary. For the latest information, users are advised to refer to the official OsiriX website or other reputable sources.
Since 2010, a commercial version of OsiriX, named “OsiriX MD,” has been available. Its source code is still available on Githu. A demo version, “OsiriX Lite,” remains free of charge with some limitations.
With high performance and an intuitive interactive user interface, the app is the world’s most widely used DICOM viewer. It is the result of more than 10 years of research and development in digital imaging. It fully supports the DICOM standard for easy integration in your workflow environment and an open platform for the development of processing tools. It offers advanced post-processing techniques in 2D and 3D, an exclusive innovative technique for 3D and 4D navigation, and complete integration with any PACS. OsiriX Lite for macOS supports 64-bit computing and multithreading for the best performances on the most modern processors. OsiriX MD, the commercial version, is certified for medical use (FDA-cleared and CE II labeled).
OsiriX Lite for Mac
OsiriX Lite for Mac is an image processing software dedicated to DICOM images (“.dcm”/. “DCM” extension) produced by medical equipment (MRI, CT, PET, PET-CT, …) and confocal microscopy (LSM and BioRAD-PIC format). It can read many other file formats: TIFF (8,16, 32 bits), JPEG, PDF, AVI, MPEG, and Quicktime. It complies with the DICOM standard for image communication and file formats. OsiriX Lite can receive images transferred by DICOM communication protocol from any PACS or medical imaging modality (STORE SCP – Service Class Provider, STORE SCU – Service Class User, and Query/Retrieve).
It has been specifically designed for navigation and visualization of multimodality and multidimensional images: 2D Viewer, 3D Viewer, 4D Viewer (3D series with temporal dimension, for example, Cardiac-CT), and 5D Viewer (3D series with temporal and functional dimensions, for example, Cardiac-PET-CT). The 3D Viewer offers all modern rendering modes: Multiplanar reconstruction (MPR), Surface Rendering, Volume Rendering, and Maximum Intensity Projection (MIP). All these modes support 4D data and can produce image fusion between two different series (for example, PET-CT).
Features and Highlights
It includes an intuitive interface to display the images. It supports high-quality interpolation for best rendering, with Retina screens support. You can easily add Key Images and Region Of Interest (ROIs) on the images, including lines, polygons, and 3D balls, and save them in the database. You can apply convolutions filters on images, such as bone or lung filters. OsiriX MD supports 4D images, such as cardiac or perfusion acquisitions, and parametric images, such as PET-CT images. You can define ‘Hanging Protocols’ with multiple screens support.
Our X Lite offers all the modern post-processing techniques, such as MPR (Multiplanar Reconstruction) and 3D Rendering (MIP, Volume Rendering, and Surface Rendering). OsiriX MD supports curved planar reconstruction (3D-MPR) to follow organs such as the aorta or bronchi. You can export 3D reconstruction images as movies and archive them on your PACS.
All Image Formats Support
OsiriX MD supports DICOM files and several non-DICOM images, such as LSM files, BioRadPIC, TIFF, ANALYZE, PNG, JPEG, PDF, Quicktime, AVI, MPEG, and more.
Medical Images Support
It reads and displays all types of DICOM files produced by medical imaging modalities, including images produced by scanners, MRI, ultrasounds, or standard X-rays. It can read and display all the DICOM fields associated with the images, such as radiation dose, image position, and referring physician; OsiriX can export DICOM files to CD/DVD or USB sticks, including a stand-alone cross-platform viewer to display the images.
DICOM Network Support
It can communicate with other equipment, including the PACS server, through the DICOM Network protocol. It supports all the compression algorithms and transfer syntaxes. The program can receive or send DICOM files through the DICOM Network protocol. OsiriX MD can directly print images on DICOM printers.
Expansion & Scientific Research
It supports a complete dynamic plugin architecture to extend the existing functions. These plugins can directly access the pixels of the image as a 32-bit float for manipulation. These plugins can create and manage windows 7/8.1/10/11 and the entire Cocoa framework, including OpenGL views. An OsiriX MD plugin is faster than IDL and easier than ImageJ.
Access to a DICOM source of images (PACS, DICOM-compatible software) through WiFi/3G network
Images are limited to 1536×1536 pixels. Bigger images are down-sampled.
Not suitable for primary diagnosis.

OsiriX is simultaneously a DICOM PACS workstation for imaging and an image processing software package for research (radiology and nuclear imaging), functional imaging, 3D imaging, confocal microscopy, and molecular imaging.
OsiriX supports a complete plugin architecture that allows one to expand the capabilities of OsiriX for personal needs. OsiriX is released under a proprietary license and runs under macOS.
OsiriX source code makes heavy use of Apple idioms such as Cocoa. The source is almost entirely in Objective-C.
In 2010, the OsiriX Team created Pixmeo to promote and distribute a limited version of OsiriX called OsiriX MD. Unlike the regular version, this version is certified for medical imaging. OsiriX MD is an FDA-cleared 510k class II medical device, according to US Food And Drug Regulation CFR21 part 820. OsiriX MD complies with European Directive 93/42/EEC concerning medical devices. Under this directive, it is regarded as a class IIa.
